Can You Water Your Lawn Too Much?

There are a lot of misconceptions buzzing around about how often one should water their lawn. Many people believe wrongly that their lawn is especially 'thirsty' and needs more water.

The main thing to remember is that you can definitely overwater your lawn and that is harmful not only to your lawn but also to your wallet.

If you are complaining that your lawn 'costs' you too much, then read on to see tips on how to water your lawn just the right amount.

Figure Out How Much Water Your Lawn Needs

Your lawn does not need an inch of water a week. That's an old concept that's falsely floating around.

Remember that your lawn can only absorb water at a certain rate, that is, 0.09 inches per hour into clay soils. A sprinkler system will drop water much faster than that, at the rate of 0.25 to 1.5 inches per hour or more.

That's why you need to set up your sprinkler or misting system to be more economical. You can also set up your sprinkler system to 'cycle and soak', that is, to run for 10 minutes, and then switch off for an hour.

This allows water to absorb into the soil, while the sprinkler system is in 'soak' mode.

Water Your Lawn at Specific Times

Are you watering your lawn in the evenings or after a rainstorm? That's not a good use of your dollars now, is it?

Only water your lawn in between the hours of 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. and avoid watering your lawn before or after a rainstorm.

You could also set up your misting system to water the lawn before 4 a.m. so that you are not using water at peak household hours. That will definitely reduce your monthly water bills.

Let Your Lawn Get Thirsty — It's Good For It

The one thing you are probably not aware of is that it's actually good for your lawn grass to get thirsty. That helps your lawn grass grow deeper roots. And that makes them stronger and healthier.

Don't fear that you are abandoning your lawn by not watering it enough. What doesn't kill it definitely makes it stronger, at least in this case.
