Tips for a Successful Garden

New to gardening? No worries. Once you get the hang of it, gardening is both simple and fun. We can’t wait for you to fall in love with gardening, and just to help you along, we’ve come up with three fundamental tips that will help you master the skill. Good luck!

Compost โ€“ First things first, build a compost pile. Doing this will not only improve the overall health of your garden, but it will also keep you from producing excess waste. Anything organic can be tossed into a compost pile: banana peels, apple cores, egg shells, leaves, twigs, and grass clippings. Make sure that you use your compost pile, too. Spread it around the base of your plants and into the soil whenever you transplant.

Mulch โ€“ Mulch doesn’t just make your garden look clean and polished, it also benefits the plants! Mulch helps lock in the moisture, which is especially important during warm summer months. It also keeps weeds from growing and helps keep away harmful insects and diseases. Just make sure you don’t use too much. Some plants are hypersensitive to mulch and could suffer if the mulch touches their stems or leaves.

Get Out There โ€“ With today’s technology, it is easy to avoid setting foot in the garden. Automatic sprinkler systems as well as rain and freeze sensors make it easy for us to live our busy lifestyles while still reaping the benefits of a homegrown garden. As helpful as these tools may be, don’t forget to get out there. It’s important to spend time among your plants because, from a close vantage point, you’ll be able to see if they’re healthy. Is each individual getting enough water? Are any competing for sunlight? Have any harmful insects moved in? Even if you know your plants are healthy, nothing is more relaxing than spending time in the garden on a sunny afternoon.
