How to Winterize Your Sprinkler System

Now that the summer months are on their way out, it’s time to start thinking about ways to protect your home investments from the incoming cold weather. A sprinkler system is beneficial because it takes the guess work out of when and how much to water your lawn and gardens. Those on timers are even more convenient because they can be set to turn on and off as needed, without any daily manual entry needed. Keeping these systems functioning is important. To protect them in the winter months, we’re offering some tips on how to winterize your sprinkler system.

Blow Out

One of the most important things to do before the temperatures drop outside is to blow out all the water from your system and hoses before it freezes up. You can call a professional, or if you’re handy, use an air compressor to ensure that all moisture that could potentially freeze, expand, or cause other issues, is removed. Be sure to check that all zones have been properly blown out without over drying and risking equipment meltdown.

Shut Off & Insulate

To further protect your irrigation system, you’ll also need to turn off the water supply and add insulation and wrap around the main shut-off valve. This is the best way to protect it from below freezing temps. Also, remember that if your sprinkler system runs above ground, that piping will be exposed to the elements without any protection and will need some kind of insulation to keep them it bursting or cracking.

Swap Out Hardware

In addition to insulating, you should also swap out hardware on things like misters that are part of your overall irrigation system. Brass mist plugs should replace brass mist nozzles during the fall and winter when it’s no longer being used as a way to prevent debris from entering the system and causing issues for next season.
