There is so much care and attention that goes into a beautiful lawn. Even if you think you’re keeping a regular watering schedule for your lawn, it may still be lacking the vital nutrient. Things like poorly aerated soil and other factors could prevent the water you’re sprinkling onto the lawn from actually making it to the root. Over time, this can cause the grass to wilt. One way to test if this is the case with your lawn is to step on the grass. If it springs back up from the shape of your foot, it is hydrated, if not, you’ll need to start watering more. Be conservative about water use if you’re in a drought and can only water once a day, be sure to pick the most optimal time to do so.
Especially in areas where the sun gets super-hot during the afternoon, you’ll want to plan to water your grass earlier in the morning before sunrise. Watering later in the day will risk the sun drying up the water before it’s had a chance to soak into the ground. Watering at night is also not recommended because it can sit wet for a long time and cause disease and other issues. Especially if you’re in a drought, the last thing you’ll want to do is needlessly waste water that isn’t going to good use.
If you know you won’t be able to regularly provide the water needed, or that an extreme heat wave is coming, plan on keeping the grass cut longer than its usual length. But if your grass is extremely dry and you haven’t had any moisture yet, avoid cutting it to further damage the blades of grass until after there has been some water provided.
