Before the snow falls and you can’t see the grass outside, do one final clean up. After all of the leaves have fallen and the trees are bare and your flowers are no longer blooming, go around an cut back tree branches, prune all of the shrubs on your property and give your lawn one final low cut mow to maintain it over the winter months. This will help keep the grass from getting matted and allow it some extra time for growth over the few months when you won’t be able to cut it.
You’re not totally off the hook after that final clean up. You’ll still need to care for your lawn over the rest of the winter, and especially when snow falls. Do this by being aware of where you’re shoveling paths (hint: it shouldn’t be over a patch of grass) and ensuring that ice buildup isn’t left on the lawn.
Since snowfall predictions aren’t always accurate, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on just how much water your grass is getting. While it might not need as much water as in the hot summer months, it needs at least ½ an inch. It’s possible in winter, if there is less precipitation than usual, to dry your lawn out. While dormant grass can be helped, you don’t want to kill the grass totally because that will need to be replaced come spring. Remember not to water in freezing temperatures though since the ground will not soak it up.
