Tips for Fall: How to Take Care of Your Lawn

Fall is a great time to get in all your fun outdoors before it becomes too cold to spend leisure time in the yard. But while you’re enjoying those last few weeks by a bonfire or watching a sporting event, keep in mind that you should also put lawn care on your list. Dedicating some time to tidying up and prepping your yard for the winter will save you time when spring rolls around to get your lawn ready for more outdoor enjoyment.

Here are some tips on what you should do to care of your lawn this fall.

Cut & Clean Up

One of the biggest tasks involved with getting your lawn in good shape before winter is cleaning it up. Whether it’s repairing brown patches and bare spots from the summer or picking up leaves and branches that have fallen, the most important thing to do is grab a rake or leaf blower and remove anything covering and smothering grass from getting air and water delivered to the root. Once you’ve done this, you should also be sure to cut the lawn to just the right length before winter comes around. The recommended height for grass is 2 inches at this time of year so it is shorter and won’t get matted from leaves and snow.

Fertilizing & Prep for Spring

Delivering vital nutrients to your lawn prior to winter is important because it will be feeding off of that over the course of the next few months. Ask for professional help from an experienced gardener to see what type of fertilizer will work best in your location and for the type of grass your yard grows. Combine this with use of an aerator and you’ll have a great set-up for a lush carpet. You should also spend some time pulling out any dead weeds or plants that are seasonal and will no longer grow then move soil around so it’s ready for planting again next season.

Don’t Skip Watering

Just because it’s not hot out any longer doesn’t mean your grass isn’t in need of vital water for growth. Don’t skip watering if you want to keep your grass healthy. While the frequencies may need to be adjusted, you should still keep the ground moist enough to promote healthy growth.
