Imagine a Day Without Water Event, October 12, 2017

water-droplet.jpgOn October 12, 2017 the Value of Water Campaign will host its third annual Imagine a Day Without Water event, which raises critical awareness about the importance of a safe, reliable water infrastructure and reduction of water waste.

Why there is a Problem

Water is invaluable. It is the most common bond between every living thing on the planet. Water is the lifeblood of our economy. It affects our daily lives in ways we often take for granted. We rely on water for all of our food, transportation, manufacturing and energy production. We need it to survive!

Consider if the water infrastructure were compromised. The fallout would be disastrous! The water infrastructure we currently have in place is an invisible entity that not many average citizens think about or get a chance to see. We simply assume it will always be there in good working order. But the reality is that after more than a century, this infrastructure is aging and failing. On average, about every two minutes, there is a water main break somewhere in the U.S. Additionally, wastewater from manufacturing, power plants, and even irrigation, is contaminating other natural water supplies, only adding to the rapid decrease in potable and usable water availability. One-fifth of the economy would collapse without a clean and reliable water source.

Some sobering statistics regarding water usage and infrastructure in the U.S. today:

There is some hopeful news! Investments in water infrastructure from local and civic organizations, as well as national and international corporations, are on the rise thanks to projects such as the Value of Water Campaign, spearheaded by top leaders in the water industry, and tied into the Imagine a Day Without Water , which are now held nationwide each year. These initiatives help to inspire our nation to realize how water and its infrastructure can be immeasurably preserved and protected.

Although the above statistics are overwhelming, investing and becoming knowledgeable in the nation’s water infrastructure will create jobs and promote economic growth, all while maintaining a clean water supply, improving the environment, and having a solid framework for efficient water delivery and conservation.
