How to Keep Your Lawn Healthy and Lush Through Autumn

Just because the end of summer means closing up the pool and less time at the beach, it doesn’t mean forgoing lawn care. If you take pride in the green carpet that surrounds your home, Fall is the perfect time to get your lawn prepped and ready to produce healthy green grass come spring.

Here are some tips for how to keep your lawn health and lush this Fall.

Watering

Using a sprinkler system is the best way to ensure your lawn is getting the proper water it needs to thrive. Since we're spending less time outdoors by the pool, we may forget how important it is to run the hose and water the lawn. But you still want to pick a frequency that keeps the ground moist enough while not overwatering and promoting fungal growth.

Fertilizing

It’s important to assess the current condition of your lawn as you head into the Fall season. There are numerous types of seeds and fertilizers that can help promote growth and get your grass in better condition for next season. You can even target and work on small dead patch areas at this time by laying seeds and watering.

Cutting

Smart landscapers know that cutting the lawn at just the right lengths can significantly improve appearance and quality of grass. In summer it's recommended to keep grass a bit longer to support strong roots and growth. However, in the Fall, the recommendation is to turn the setting on your lawn mower back to the normal 2 inch length to help keep grass at a manageable height and one that won’t get matted from heavy leaves or snow sitting atop it.

Aerating

Aerating your lawn is a great way to ensure its vitality. Using the proper tools to punch holes and disrupt the soil is a great way to get air into the dirt, ensure water is being penetrated and that any fertilizer and spreads being used actually make it the root.

Cleaning

While having the pretty autumn colors on trees is great for a picture or Sunday drive, leaves can wreak havoc on your grass. Large piles of leaves can keep important sunlight from hitting the grass and even cause moisture to get trapped on the grass. Use a rake or leaf blower to make a neat pile and bag them up for collection or mulch them down so they can be used as a top dressing to further fertilizer the land.
