If you live in a region with a mild winter climate, you can enjoy a green lawn year-round. A dormant lawn can be seeded in the winter and can grow lush and green. Ryegrass is a good choice for seeding in the winter.
You have to first prepare the dormant grass for overseeding by scalping the lawn. Cut the grass as low as possible two or three times. Bag the grass clippings while you are mowing or rake the dead grass after each mowing. This process will loosen and expose the soil at the surface and will prevent the dormant grass from shading the newly planted grass;
Use a high-quality ryegrass seed for your winter seeding. Follow the instructions on the package to set the spreader. Spread the grass seed and then apply starter food to get the grass off to a good start.
Watering is the key to getting a healthy lawn in the winter. You want to keep the top inch of soil and the grass seed moist, but not soggy, until it sprouts and becomes well established. You can accomplish this by spraying water on your lawn in a mist once or twice a day for a few weeks. Be careful not to over-water the lawn because this can create puddles that can wash away the grass seed. After the seedlings have matured, you can switch to a regular watering schedule.
Once the grass has grown to normal mowing height, you can begin to cut it. Apply lawn food starting six to eight weeks after seeding and every six to eight weeks after that for the rest of the season.
