Don’t Let Frost Ruin Your Lawn & Garden: 3 Ways to Be Prepared

Now that summer is behind us, many have switched from spending time outdoors to huddling around the TV or attending sporting events. But just because we aren’t outside, doesn’t mean neglecting that area of your home is okay.

If you’d like to have a great looking lawn and garden come next season, you’ll have to put some work into preparing your yard for the upcoming frost and cold weather so it doesn’t cause issues you’ll be left to deal with next season.

Here are 3 ways to be prepared before frost hits.

Maintain Regular Watering

Over the few last weeks before freezing temperatures make their way in, it’s important to continue to water your lawn and gardens. Since the temperatures are still warm enough to allow the plants to live and grow, they’ll need the vital water resource to stay healthy. Before you winterize your sprinkler system, consider leaving it to do its job for another few weeks.

Mulch Leaves

We’ve heard over and over again about the terrible things leaves can do to your lawn if they aren’t cleaned up. From blocking out the sun to causing mold and rot – the reasons to get a rake out are endless. But you may be able to save yourself some strain if you mulch leaves instead - and as an added benefit, your lawn will provide additional nutrients to the roots to foster growth.

Fertilize

The best way to be prepared for the upcoming season is to use fertilizers on your grass. These work by replacing the soils nutrients that have been stripped over the summer and to keep grass feed over the winter. Ingredients such as phosphorous and nitrogen-rich products are great for supporting the roots and helping grass to grow.

The best time to put fertilizer onto your grass is the late fall, just before the first frost. Over the course of the winter the extra nutrients will be absorbed and your grass will be protected and ready to grow full and plush come next spring and summer.
