Are you tired of fighting with pesky weeds? Have you wasted hundreds of dollars on “miracle” weed killers that never seem to work? Weeds can be the most frustrating part about keeping a healthy lawn. So, stop wasting money on harsh weed killers, as there are much simpler, organic ways of getting rid of weeds that are safer for your lawn and easier on your budget.
It’s a common misconception that mowing your lawn super short will buy you more time between mowing. This isn’t true; in fact, mowing your lawn short will promote faster growth as well as damage your lawn. Mow your grass high to slow down the growth rate of your grass as well as choke out weeds. Weeds, like grass, need sunlight to survive. Keeping your grass longer – four inches is ideal – will keep weeds shaded and make it harder for them to get the sunlight they need. This will also prevent weed seedlings from sprouting.
Another way to kill off pesky weeds is to mow frequently. Don’t confuse this for keeping your lawn short. Mow high, but mow often. Mow high to chop of the flowering heads of any weeds growing in your lawn. Unlike your grass, weeds grow from the top of the plant. Frequent mowing will not affect your lawn, but it will suppress the growth of any weeds currently growing in your lawn.
A healthy lawn will inevitably choke out any weeds; however, a dry lawn is a weak lawn, and a weak lawn is ideal for weed growth. Be careful, as we are not telling you to water more frequently – just deeply. Leave your sprinkler or irrigation system on a bit longer than normal to ensure that water is penetrating deep into the soil. Some plants require more or less water than others, so be careful not to overwater. A healthy lawn with a few weeds is better than a drowned lawn with no weeds.
