Can Overseeding Help Thicken Your Lawn?

Most homeowners take pride in their lawn. It’s a part of the property that really showcases how much you care about the appearance and condition of your dwelling. Even the most architecturally beautiful home will lose its glamour if there is dry, dead grass laid out in front of it. A lush carpet of green grass isn’t that hard to achieve either. With the right know-how and some basic nutrients, your family can also enjoy the benefits of a full, healthy lawn.

One way to help thicken your grass so it is fuller looking is to over seed it. Add some water and the proper care as well and this will help ensure bald spots get filled in and can even eliminate pesky weeds.

The best way to prep your lawn and properly care for it is to keep it cut to the appropriate lengths. This can vary by season and weather conditions, but mostly you’ll want to keep it shorter in the cold winter months and a little longer when it’s warmer out.

When to Seed Your Lawn

A good time to seed your lawn is when you have cut it to a low setting and raked up any leaves and debris. Be sure to also use a rake that allows you to dig up the soil a bit as you rake so it loosens it up and can accept the seeds you’ll be laying down more readily.

Fall and spring seasons (depending where you live) are the best times to practice seeding your lawn because the ground hasn’t frozen yet and the air isn’t too warm to dry out any water you provide.

How to Put Seeds Down

You’ll want to spread seeds across the lawn to cover areas that are bare as well as the rest of the lawn. Once you have added seeds – be sure to be generous about laying down seeds in those areas in need of new growth. Once this is done, you should ensure your grass is getting the water it needs to grow new patches of grass or thicken the areas that have gone sparse. Either water your lawn about 2 times a day if there isn’t much other moisture sources, or, get a programmable timer for your sprinkler system and set it to the appropriate settings.
