Back to Basics: Organic Lawn Care Tips & Benefits

The lawn in your yard isn’t just part of the curb appeal on your property. It’s also the place where you spend time when you’re grilling or going for a swim and where your kids and pets likely play. While having a lush carpet of green grass is enviable, caring for and achieving that in an eco-friendly way has many benefits too.

Taking things back to the basics might mean a little more leg work, but the benefits far exceed the effort. Here are some basic tips for organic lawn care.

Benefits of Organic Lawn Care

Before we talk about the ‘how,’ let’s discuss the ‘why.’ The problem with chemicals and pesticides in your lawn care regimen is that once water hits it and there is run off, you’re now polluting the other things around it. Water, plants, things that we and wildlife ingest into our bodies. There’s also the fact that some of the ingredients in these lawn chemicals eventually cause disease in the nutrients plants depend on, so you’ll start to see more crop rot and poor looking grass anyways. Instead, when your soil has organic content, it works naturally to fight disease and actually grows better.

How to Take Care of Your Lawn

Achieving a healthy and full lawn will take some work, at least initially, but it isn’t impossible or expensive. To start you’ll want to be sure you’re cutting your lawn at a recommended height. Typically 3-4 inches since it holds rain water the best. When watering your lawn, you should soak it well enough to reach the root and then wait until the lawn has completely dried out again before re-watering it. If weeds start to appear you can use cornmeal before they sprout as a natural deterrent. If already grown weeds are an issue, you could also use the cutting method where removing the heads stop seeds like those from dandelions from spreading. Organic compost from manure and other naturally decomposed matter when added to soil, enriches it and makes it healthier and more self-sufficient.
